PREP

If you don’t have an account, go here and create one:

https://www.havasupaireservations.com/public/login

You must have the following available at all times, at the checkpoint on the way to the trailhead, as well as when on the reservation.

  • Print out or screenshot of your account information page: Go to “Account” at the top, choose Profile, then click link to “Your proof of Account is here”
  • Proof of campground reservation (a print out or screen shot of the campground reservation), I will have a couple hardcopies and a copy is at the end of this site you can download if you want a copy of it to store on your phone.
  • Photo ID

If you are planning to drive a vehicle to the trailhead:

  • I will need your Make/Model and License plate info at check-in.
  • You need to leave something with the “Campground Reservation Confirmation Code” visibly displayed through the front windshield on the passenger side. Our confirmation code is at the top

Masks:

  • It does say that masks are required in the village, with potential penalty of being kicked out. But that said, it sounds like very few of the natives and visitors actually wear them.

Food

Stoves:

  • Dave
  • Jodi
  • Chad
  • Z

Water Storage: 5 Gallon collapsible tank for storing water at camp site

  • Chad

Water Filter (Some are more comfortable filtering)

  • Dave
  • Scott

Food Storage:

It sounds like the general consensus is Rat Bags.

I have purchased a medium (Specs say 20 liters) and an ultralight (Specs say 7 liters). I was able to squeeze 11 meals and some snacks into the medium with a little extra room.

We ordered ours from geartrade, com, and was a great price and delivered quickly (comes from Sandy, UT). This is a link to the medium one.

Drive Down

  • Renee and I are heading to St. George on Saturday and staying at Temple RV for the night.
  • We are leaving St. George Sunday morning for Grand Canyon Caverns. Check in is from 6am to 7pm for the permit, and the drive from St. George is just over 4 hours. We haven’t decided on a solid time to leave on Sunday, but will likely be before noon just to make sure we get there well before the permit check in closes for the day.

Carpool

  • With a party of 8, we will need at least 2 cars to get to the trailhead
  • Renee and I are driving down and can take a couple of extra passengers, either from home or from St. George
  • Does anybody know where we could possibly leave a couple cars in St. George if we need to? Or who we could talk to at Temple RV to verify we can do it there?

Lodging

Grand Canyon Caverns Inn, Mile Marker 115 Route 66, Peach Springs, AZ 86434

https://gccaverns.com/

Don’t let Google Maps confuse you. Grand Canyon Caverns Inn isn’t in Peach Springs itself, it is east of it 35.529182, -113.231029. You can also search for Grand Canyon Caverns Campground which is part of the Inn and seems to take you to the correct location

Permit Check-In

I am attempting to clarify what is needed for the Check-In, at the moment it looks like I am the only one that is required to be there for the check-in itself. If that changes I will send an update.  Check in is 6am to 7pm, so I will be there long before they stop on Sunday.  It is just under 8 hours from my house to the Hotel, and is just over 4 hours from St. George.

Check-In process (From their site):

Check-in for all permit reservations will take place at Grand Canyon Caverns Inn, located at Mile Marker 115, Route 66 near Seligman, Arizona 86434. The trip leader must check-in for all members of their group. The trip leader may check-in starting on the day before your arrival date through the end of your permit date. If you arrive and check-in a day or two late, you still must exit the canyon on your original departure date.

The check-in office is located around the back of the Inn lobby when you walk through the main doors or you can access it by entering from the back of the building. There will be signs. The check-in office is open every day from 6 am – 7 pm.

The trip leader will need to provide photo ID to receive all permits, wristbands, bag tags, and an entrance form, which will need to be completed and shown to the Havasupai Reservation

boundary checkpoint staff and/or the Tourist Office employee stationed at Hilltop.

All members of the group will be asked to show all required paperwork (see above) at the Havasupai Reservation boundary checkpoint, approximately 5 miles from Hilltop (the trailhead). There will be no congregating at the checkpoint so please make sure all members of your group have the required paperwork. Please follow directions and signs at the checkpoint.

If you will be parking a vehicle at Hilltop, you will need to indicate the license plate number of each vehicle on your check-in information. Please note that the Tribe is not responsible for vehicles parked at Hilltop.

Leaving for Trailhead

We haven’t completely discussed and timed this out, but I believe we are planning to head to the trailhead around 3:30-4:30AM Monday.

Heading Home

Renee and I are heading back to St. George and plan to stay until Sunday. Keep this into account if you plan to carpool with us from Salt lake area.
